As a young child, he moved with his family to Del Norte, Colorado, where he was raised and later graduated from Del Norte High School in 1957. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1964. On November 14, 1964, he married the love of his life, Sophie Trujillo Fresquez. One year later, they welcomed their second son, Robert. Three years later, their first daughter, Audrey, was born, followed 11 years later by their second daughter, Paulette.
Robert began his working life on a farm and later worked in the Summitville mining area. After the mine closed, he worked at the South Fork Sawmill. When the sawmill closed, he continued his career at the Perlite Mine in Antonito, Colorado, where he remained until his retirement. A man dedicated to serving others, Robert was an active member of the Del Norte Fire Department for 25 years. He also served as a Eucharistic minister and catechist at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Del Norte for many years.
