Barbara Grace Gates, 92, of Del Norte, Colorado, peacefully passed away on June 23, 2026, in Monte Vista, Colorado.

Barbara was born on January 23, 1934, in Osborne, Kansas, to Russell and Grace Crawford. As a young girl, her family moved to Del Norte, Colorado, where she fell in love with the mountains, put down roots, and spent the rest of her life.

While attending Del Norte High School, Barbara met the love of her life, Melvin Gates. They were married on February 19, 1952, and shared 72 wonderful years together.

Barbara was a devoted stay-at-home mother who dedicated herself to raising her three children. She also found great joy in serving her community through volunteer work. An avid reader and member of Val Alto, Barbara enjoyed cross-stitching, cheering on the Denver Broncos, camping, gardening, and, above all, spending time with her family. She held a special connection to the heart- and eagle-shaped formations in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which always held a special place in her heart.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Grace Crawford; her beloved husband, Melvin Gates; her son, Michael Gates; and her great-grandsons, Oryan Bone and Rowen Vanderpool.

She is survived by her son, Mark Gates; her daughter, Shelly (Danny) Vanderpool; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends, all of whom will cherish her memory and carry forward her legacy of love and kindness.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at United Pioneer Church, 630 Spruce Street, Del Norte, Colorado. Inurnment will follow at Del Norte Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff at Homelake for the loving care of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. We would also like to thank Jessica of Strohmayer’s Funeral Home for taking us by the hand and showing us the way in this difficult time.

Barbara will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her warmth, generosity, and unwavering love for her family and community will remain an enduring legacy.
